The Queen Mother Champion Chase

2.20pm Wednesday 11th March 2009

The feature race on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival is the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Last year (2008), Paul Nichols won the race with one of the most masterful performances in  the race with MASTERMINDED. He impressively won by a monster 19 lengths, the biggest winning margin of the 2008 festival in beating VOY POR USTEDES, the 2007 Champion. He was beaten at Aintree a few weeks later with his victim in the Champion Chase turning the tale and defeating him  by 18 lengths himself, but it is not unusual for Cheltenham form and Aintree form to be reversed. He made his debut this season in the TINGLE CREEK and in winning accounted for the likes of TIDAL BAY and the 2008 winner of the race TWIST MAGIC who was going well before coming to grief late on. Master minded has been installed as a very short and odds on favourite for the race this year, but showed everyone exactly what he could do, when once again destroying the field at Ascot on the 17th January. It would take a brave man to bet against Paul Nichols winning this race again this year, with what is now surely regarded as the best chaser in the world.
